SUGAR CANE CARNIVAL 2003
IT? IT was a matter of dramatic Venetian masks, a baroque Italian
theme enhanced be the sweet sensation of Antonio Vivaldi’s ‘Four
Seasons’, an Epicurean feast that created the ambience for the
annual Sugar Can Ball.
It was tailor-made to make money for the single
largest one night charity event in Jamaica. The Associated Hanover
Charities (AHC) and not even the Venetians in Italy could have outdone
the dynamic hardworking carnival committee last Saturday night.
The Venue was the fabulously elegant Round Hill
Hotel, dressed up with floating gondolas, bamboo torches, stunning
lights, tables decorated with colorful Venetian masks complemented
by magnificent candelabras, a sumptuous Italian fare and dancing
to the music of the sensational Cindy Lewis and the band Sahaba.
This time around, the organizers were bent on
raising the over US$125,000 that they raised last year. A year that
saw the group providing meals and books for schools, equipment for
hospitals, homes and the handicapped.
This year’s auction saw an array of
work donated by the Western Jamaica Society of Fine Artists, two
long banquet tables were lined with some of the most magnificent
pieces any auction could boast.
