Hanover Charities

The Hanover Charities is the largest charitable organization in Western Jamaica . It was founded 1957 by the late William Hornby deLisser, Custos of Hanover, who enlisted the aid of Lord and Lady Monson (now Mrs. Betty Phillips), Round Hill and Tryall shareholders.

As a non-profit, exclusively charitable organization, we rely on donations from past and potential visitors to our beautiful island, as well as local donations. The charity committee organizes one fundraiser per year, which is held at Round Hill Hotel and Villas in February, called the “Sugar Cane Carnival”.

Our endeavors are to improve the quality of life for the parish of Hanover , generally regarded as the “Cinderella” parish of Jamaica . We contribute to community health, education and welfare activities, and assist over sixty charities in Hanover Parish.

Requests for funding of specific projects are carefully investigated and screened by the board of the Hanover Charities, headed by chairperson Mrs. Paula Watkins, a homeowner of the Tryall Club. Great emphasis is placed on credibility, feasibility, and project justification and thereafter on full accountability of allocated funds. The late Sandy Morris, who has been the chairman of the HC for many years, has brought the organization to a higher level. The 2004 carnival fundraiser has been yet another record in Hanover Charities’ history. “We raised over US$ 140,000.00 which we are particularly thrilled about considering changes in worldwide economical climates. We are pleased to say that we gained support from every person, local and foreign, and we thank them immensely. It will be a challenge for us to top this amount at the next fundraiser held at Round Hill, the Sugar Cane Carnival on February 19, 2005 .” Says Katrin Casserly, vice chairman of HC. Hanover Charities has also founded the “Sandy Morris Memorial Scholarship” and in the fourth year, we now are going to support five students.
